Tower of London School Visit

A visit to the Tower of London supports the teaching of the new Primary History Curriculum at Key Stage 1.

These informative, participatory and engaging education sessions are closely aligned with requirements to teach children about the lives of significant individuals in the past as well as providing opportunities to compare aspects of life in the past with the modern day. They also support schools wishing to focus on significant historical events, people and places in their locality.

Delivered by expert presenters, these sessions are designed to introduce pupils to primary source material, replica artefacts and everyday historical terms. All sessions are designed for classes of up to 30 children.

Home for a King

Did King Edward I wear pyjamas? Find out the answer to this and many other fascinating questions in this engaging session! A costumed presenter representing a member of the royal household will help pupils to examine replica artefacts to understand the workings of a medieval royal household. The King’s bed chamber will come to life with stories of the Tower's fascinating past comparing medieval home life with lives today. This session especially supports the development of historical enquiry skills also encouraging the development of speaking and listening skills and asking perceptive questions.

Knights, Castles and Kings

Transport your students back in time to a world of knights, castles and kings. In this session a costumed presenter will captivate you with true tales from the Tower's colourful history while exploring the different roles and functions in one of the oldest fortresses in Britain.

The session especially supports the development of historical enquiry and speaking and listening skills through storytelling. Using architecture and stories as historical sources, pupils will explore key concepts of significance, continuity and change to further their understanding of the past. Stories can vary depending on the age and interests of the group.

This session includes time spent exploring outdoor areas of the site - please encourage students to dress appropriately for the weather.

Fire! Fire!

It is 1666, London is ablaze. The fire is spreading east approaching the Tower's doorstep… and the fortress is filled with gunpowder! Students will meet a costumed character who will describe these terrible events and tell the story of Mr Pepys watching the flames from inside the ancient Tower walls.

This session especially supports the development of historical enquiry and speaking and listening skills by exploring the historic environment through storytelling and role play. Pupils are encouraged to explore key concepts of significance, cause and consequence as the story unfolds.
